Microsoft Offered 60,000 Employees a Way Out — Here’s What It Really Means

Imagine opening your inbox to an email from your employer: leave now, with money and career support — or stay, and take your chances. That is exactly what around 60,000 Microsoft employees have just been offered. Social media is calling it a mass firing. It is not. But it is a warning shot for every worker in the age of AI.

What actually happened

On 26 October 2026, Microsoft’s Chief People Officer, Amy Coleman, sent an internal memo introducing a Voluntary Exit Offer, or VEO. Around 60,000 employees in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and India are eligible to apply — roughly 27% of Microsoft’s global workforce of about 223,000 people, as reported in June 2026.

The offer is open to employees at internal level 70 and below, which covers everyone up to vice president level. But it does not cover the whole company: only selected organisations are participating. As Coleman put it, participation varies based on each business’s priorities, customer commitments and workforce needs.

Who is in, and who is out

Among the teams reported to be included are Windows, Copilot, Xbox, finance and human resources. Among those excluded are data centre operations, cybersecurity and parts of sales and marketing — the areas Microsoft is still actively building as it pours money into AI.

That split tells the real story. This is not a company in trouble cutting everywhere. It is a company moving its people and money towards AI, and quietly shrinking the parts that matter less to that plan.

What is on the table

The package is described as similar to Microsoft’s standard severance deal, with the amount depending on job level and length of service. Reports based on individual offers say US employees at level 64 and below were offered one week of base pay for every six months of employment, and those at levels 65 to 67 were offered two weeks per six months, with caps applying. Some employees are also offered extended healthcare and stock, plus career planning resources.

Eligible employees must decide by early December. Those whose exits are approved will leave on 31 December 2026. Microsoft has also said it may try to persuade key talent to stay if they apply — a reminder that approval is not automatic.

Why now: the AI bill

Microsoft has planned capital expenditure of around $175 billion in 2026, mostly for AI infrastructure, and has opened nearly 90 hyperscale data centres this year alone. Buildings and chips of that scale need funding, and the workforce is where some of it comes from.

This offer follows more than 15,000 job cuts in 2025 and around 4,800 roles cut since June 2026. Earlier in 2026, Microsoft ran a smaller voluntary retirement programme for US employees; reports say around 30% of that smaller group accepted. This time, Microsoft expects a lower take-up rate.

What the viral posts get wrong

Three corrections matter, because the panic online is misleading people:

First, 60,000 eligible does not mean 60,000 fired. Nobody is being forced out by this offer. Each employee decides individually, and Microsoft has announced no target for departures.

Second, history suggests most will stay. When Google ran a similar voluntary programme in 2025, only 3% to 5% of eligible staff took it. At that rate, Microsoft would see roughly 1,800 to 3,000 departures — a big number, but nowhere near 60,000.

Third, staying does not mean getting nothing later. Microsoft has said voluntary departures will not replace involuntary cuts if business conditions demand them — but involuntary layoffs at large companies normally still come with severance. The “take it now or get nothing” version spreading online is not how it works.

What it means for the rest of us

You do not need to work at Microsoft for this to matter. When the world’s most valuable companies reshape themselves around AI, every industry feels it sooner or later. Job security today comes less from the name on your office door and more from skills that stay useful as the tools change.

For small businesses, the lesson runs the other way: the same AI tools that are reshaping giants are now cheap enough for a small team to use — answering customers, booking appointments, and handling routine work around the clock. The businesses that learn to use them will do more with fewer people. The ones that ignore them will feel the same pressure Microsoft is acting on, just on a smaller scale.

Common questions

If I received the offer, am I being fired? No. It is a choice, and you can turn it down and keep your job.

How many people will actually leave? Nobody knows yet. Microsoft has set no target, and past programmes suggest only a small fraction of eligible staff accept.

Is AI the reason? Largely, yes. Microsoft is spending record amounts on AI infrastructure while reshaping its workforce around it.

What happens if I stay? You stay employed. Future layoffs remain possible, as they do at any large company, but they would normally still include a severance package.
