AI skills are now useful in almost every job. The good news? You do not need an expensive bootcamp to learn them. Microsoft offers free, self-paced courses that take you from zero to building real AI apps — and you can start today, from your own home.
Below are 10 free Microsoft Learn courses, in a simple order, with a direct link to each one. Every course is written in plain language, and you can learn at your own pace. All you need is a free Microsoft account.
Before you start
Three things to know, so nothing surprises you later:
- They are free. The training itself costs nothing. (Optional Microsoft certification exams are paid, but you do not need them to learn.)
- You learn at your own pace. There are no fixed class times. Do 30 minutes a day, or a full hour on the weekend — whatever suits you.
- Most need no experience. The first few courses assume you know nothing about AI. The later ones are for people who want to build things.
The 10 free courses
1. Introduction to AI in Azure
The starting point. This course explains, in simple terms, what AI really is — machine learning, language, vision, speech — and how Microsoft’s cloud platform supports it. Best if you are completely new to AI.
2. Get Started with AI Applications and Agents on Azure
A friendly tour of the main kinds of AI work: chat apps, text analysis, speech, images, and AI agents. It shows you what is possible before you go deep into any one area. Good for beginners who can already use a computer confidently.
3. Develop AI Agents on Azure
AI agents are programs that do multi-step jobs on their own — like researching a topic, checking data, and preparing a report. This course teaches you to build, test, and launch them. Best for people who already know basic programming.
4. Develop Generative AI Apps in Azure
This one is about building apps powered by the same kind of models behind ChatGPT: chat apps, writing helpers, and tools that answer questions from your own documents. You will learn how to pick a model, connect your data, and keep the answers safe and accurate.
5. Work with Generative AI Models in Azure Machine Learning
Go one level deeper: how do large language models actually work, and how do you run and test them yourself? This course explains the ideas behind the models, then gives you hands-on practice with them. Good for learners who enjoy the “how it works” side.
6. Create Machine Learning Models
Machine learning is the engine behind most AI. Here you learn the basics properly: how to explore data, train a model, check whether it is any good, and improve it. You will practise with real data and common tools like Python. Best for people who like numbers and problem-solving.
7. Develop Natural Language Solutions in Azure
Language is how we talk to computers now. This course teaches apps that read text, understand what people mean, translate between languages, and even listen and speak. Useful if you work with customers, support tickets, emails, or documents.
8. Extract Insights from Visual Data on Azure
Pictures and video hold a lot of information. This course shows how AI can read images, pull text out of scanned documents, describe what is in a photo, and search through large collections of visual files. Great for anyone dealing with photos, forms, or scanned paperwork.
9. Build Foundational Generative AI Skills
The everyday-skills course: how to write clear prompts, check AI answers before trusting them, and use generative AI safely at work. No coding needed. This is the one to pick if you simply want to use AI better in your daily job.
Find it on Microsoft Learn by searching the exact course name, “Build Foundational Generative AI Skills”.
10. Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence in Education
AI in schools and training needs extra care. This course covers fairness, privacy, honesty, and safety when using AI with students — what to let AI do, and what must stay a human decision. Essential for teachers, trainers, and school leaders.
Where should you begin?
It depends on your goal:
- Just curious, no experience? Start with course 1, then course 9.
- Want to use AI better at work? Start with course 9, then course 10 if you work in education.
- Want to build AI apps or agents? Do course 1 and 2 first, then 3 and 4.
- Want a career in AI? Work through the list in order, and build one small project after each course.
A simple plan that actually works
Most people quit because they try to do everything at once. Do this instead:
- Pick ONE course from the list.
- Study 30 minutes a day, at the same time each day.
- After each course, build one tiny thing — even a simple chatbot or a small data project. That project is what employers and clients actually ask about.
- Only then move to the next course.
Common questions
Are these courses really free? Yes. The training on Microsoft Learn is free for anyone. You only pay if you later choose to sit an official certification exam, which is optional.
Do I need to know coding? Not for the first courses. Coding helps for the building courses (3, 4, 7, 8), and basic Python is enough to start.
Do I get a certificate? You earn badges on your Microsoft Learn profile as you finish modules. Full Microsoft certifications need a paid exam, but the learning itself is what builds your skill.
How long will it take? The beginner courses take a few hours each. The full set is a journey of weeks, not days — and that is normal.
