Is your school actually ready for an Ofsted call?

Ofsted inspections are stressful enough without surprises. Under the current inspection framework, schools no longer receive a single headline grade — instead, Ofsted publishes a report card assessing each evaluation area separately: safeguarding, inclusion, curriculum and teaching, achievement, attendance and behaviour, personal development and wellbeing, and leadership and governance.

That is harder to prepare for than one overall judgement. A school can be strong on teaching but undone by attendance, or excellent on achievement but carrying a safeguarding blind spot. Inspectors notice the weak link first.

Our free Ofsted Readiness Checklist turns the framework into 43 plain-English checks across all seven report-card areas. Answer Yes, Partially or No to each one, and you get:

  • A readiness score for every report-card area, mapped to Ofsted's five-point scale (Exceptional, Strong standard, Expected standard, Needs attention, Urgent improvement)
  • An overall readiness percentage with a running progress bar
  • A priority action list, ordered so safeguarding and your biggest gaps come first
  • A downloadable report you can share with your SLT and governors
  • Your progress saved in the browser, so you can work through it across several sittings

Everything runs in your browser. Your answers never leave your computer — nothing is uploaded to our servers.

How to use the checklist

  1. Start at the top. The sections follow Ofsted's report-card order. Safeguarding comes first for a reason — under the framework it is judged Met or Not Met, and a Not Met overshadows everything else.
  2. Answer honestly. "Partially" is the most valuable answer on the list — it means you know the gap exists. Be honest now, when you can fix it, not later when an inspector finds it.
  3. Watch the section scores. Each section shows a percentage and a scale rating as you go. Anything below "Expected standard" deserves a place in your improvement plan.
  4. Work the priority list. Red items first, then amber. Every item carries a short tip explaining what inspectors actually look for.
  5. Share the report. Download the text report or email it to yourself — it gives governors and your SLT a clear, honest picture to plan around.

Why safeguarding comes first

Safeguarding is the only report-card area judged on a pass/fail basis: Met or Not met. The checklist treats it the same way. If your safeguarding answers would land at "Not met", the tool flags it prominently — because an inspector will.

The most common safeguarding failures are not dramatic. They are an out-of-date single central record, staff who cannot name the designated safeguarding lead, training that happened "a while ago", or a gate left propped open. Small, fixable things — if you catch them before the call.

What the scale ratings mean

The checklist maps your percentage to Ofsted's five-point scale for each area:

  • Exceptional (90%+) — practice of the highest standard nationally.
  • Strong standard (75%+) — working above the expected standard.
  • Expected standard (60%+) — meeting the expected standard.
  • Needs attention (40%+) — expected standards are not met in places, but leaders can make the necessary improvements.
  • Urgent improvement (below 40%) — action is needed to reach the expected standard.

These are self-assessment ratings, not predictions. They tell you where you stand on your own evidence — the most useful thing a school can know before inspection.

Frequently asked questions

Is this checklist really free?

Yes — completely free, no account, no limits. We built it for the schools and trusts we work with, and made it free for everyone.

Is my school's data private?

Yes. The checklist runs entirely in your browser. Your answers are stored only on your own device. The only thing that touches our server is your email address if you choose "Email me my report" — so we can send you the report and nothing else.

Does this replace reading the Ofsted handbook?

No. This is a preparation aid, not a substitute for the official school inspection handbook, Keeping Children Safe in Education, or the SEND Code of Practice. Always check current statutory guidance.

Can this predict my Ofsted grade?

No — and no honest tool can. Inspection outcomes depend on inspectors' professional judgement on the day. What the checklist does is surface gaps in your own evidence, so you can fix them while there is still time.

Who is this for?

Headteachers, deputies, school business managers, SENCOs, DSLs and governors at any maintained school, academy, free school or independent school in England.
